Northern Ireland newborn photographer: baby Daniel

As much as I love running about outside, taking pictures of kids, there’s something really special about being a newborn photographer. My photoshoot with Daniel was a textbook baby session. At 11 days old he was in the perfect age range for newborn photos, and such a cutie!

When I arrived he was wide awake and wriggling about all over the place : )

We really wanted to get some sleepy shots, but he made us wait for them! After about an hour, two feeds, a warm blanket and the central heating turned up to boiling, we finally got him to sleep.

And at last we got our sleepy newborn photos, so cute! : )

Kids: Lalit

Another busy weekend over so it’s time to catch up on my blogging. This handsome wee man is Lalit who, as you can see, was quite rightly suspicious when some stranger turned up on a Saturday morning and pointed a camera at him!

We started the photoshoot in a local playpark, where I was amazed by how well Lalit could climb for someone with such tiny legs! Parks have come a long way since I was a kid, they’re so cool and modern. No wooden roundabouts here : )

We only had one minor accident but mummy was on hand to make sure it was all ok

Autumn is a great time for rummaging through the trees, so Lalit kept himself busy collecting berries, pine cones and conkers

Look at those eyelashes! : )

I have a feeling that Lalit is a bit brighter than your average two year old, he wasn’t falling for any of my tricks. He quickly realised that there were no frogs under the hedges, and nothing exciting at all to hear on the other side of this wall, but he did play along with a game of peek-a-boo around a tree!

Then it was back home for some quick colouring in and one last smile before Lalit very politely asked me to leave! Photoshoot over : )

Thank you Phil! I tried to keep him under the trees as much as possible, there was some beautiful light there :)

wonderful child photos, Lauren. I particularly like the lighting.

Babies: Deborah

The star of today’s blog post is Deborah, who’s just about to celebrate her first birthday. She’s not quite walking yet but I have a feeling it won’t be long before she is, she was full of energy!

We started off getting a few portrait shots in her lovely purple dress. She was a bit confused by the situation but we got some great smiles eventually : )

Next we had a quick play on mum and dad’s bed, which is always fun

After a short break for a bottle we headed outside. This time of year is brilliant for photography, the colours are really great.

Dead leaves must be pretty interesting when it’s your first autumn : )

I wanted to get Deborah to crawl towards me for these shots, and her dad had just the thing to lure her over, his iPod! You’re never too young : )

Best toy ever!

We finished with some nice group shots.

A beautiful girl and such a sweet and happy family : )

Teens/Adults: Jade

I’ll admit personal interest on this one, this is my little cousin Jade (or not so little any more, she’s just started University!). She came to me looking for a photoshoot and I was happy to oblige, it was a good opportunity for me to try out some new locations and ideas that I had in the back of my mind.

When she asked for “somewhere remote” where nobody would see us, I knew immediately where I would take her. Of course having only lived on this side of the country for three weeks, Jade had no idea where we were going, but thankfully she trusted me to take her on a magical mystery tour. On the way there we stopped off for a few texture shots, a wall like this at the side of the road just can’t be ignored!

Jade literally brought a suitcase of clothes with her for outfit changes, I had to get a shot with these shoes and that waistcoat! Not my usual style but I think it suits her, very dramatic : )

Then it was on to the main location, the sand dunes at Murlough Bay, one of my favourite places in County Down. The undulating boardwalks are great for these walk-along shots.

Once up in the dunes, Jade put on another pair of crazy heels, not exactly designed for walking on sand!

The grey sky made a pretty good studio-style backdrop : )

Jade was definitely not keen on close-up shots, but I really like this one. I think her scarf and coat work perfectly with the sand and the grass and it has a cute retro feel.

The shoes!

We did get some smiling shots, it wasn’t all moody fashion!

By the time we got to the beach it was early evening and the light was just stunning. I love how the clouds were hanging over the Mourne Mountains, really beautiful.

As soon as I saw Jade’s selection of clothes I knew that the navy coat and this beach would work perfectly together with my favourite processing technique, split tones and desaturated blacks. This look is really popular at the minute with loads of the big fashion houses using it in their Autumn/Winter advertising campaigns. It’s something a bit different too. I love the big horizontal stripes on the first shot, it’s now the desktop background on my computer : )

One more moody shot for the road…

… and a bit of fun to finish the day : )

Big thanks to Jade for being a very patient model, it was great for me to get out and try something a bit different from my usual family stuff. I’m looking forward to getting back to shooting kids though, more baby blog posts coming soon! : )

Aw Claire, so glad you like them! I thought she looked really beautiful too, I told her you’d like them more than she does :) she might appreciate how good she looks a few years down the line!

Lauren Jade gave me a sneak preview last night, but when I look at these ones, you bring tears to my eyes. They are beautiful, although I say it myself!! Thanks so much. Can I order the one immediately below the three wee tiny ones, I know she’ll crack, but its my favourite. Let me know the cost and I’ll get a cheque off to you asap.
Keep up the excellent work, you seem to have found great satisfaction in what you are doing, wish I could do the same!! – Good Luck xxxx Lil Sis hahahaha

Kids: Aeryn

In my last blog post I introduced little Emily, but there was another star of my photoshoot today, her big sister Aeryn! Some kids are happy to take direction and pose for photos, and some just want to run about and have fun. Aeryn definitely fell into the second category, and that’s fine by me : ) She started off with a bit of gardening, but made sure to keep her funky wellies clean…

I do like it when kids get their hands dirty on a photoshoot : )

The smiles really came out when it was time to throw water at the photographer!

I had trouble picking a small group of photos for this blog post, and I’m not even finished editing them yet. So many cute shots. I’ll put a bigger selection on my facebook page soon. Last but not least, this might not be the kind of photo you put on your wall but it’ll certainly be good for embarrassing her when she brings her first boyfriend home! Mini-tantrum when we tried to get that one elusive posed shot : )

Thanks for looking!
